Marc Avila wird neuer Geschäftsführender Direktor des Zentrums für angewandte Raumfahrttechnologie und Mikrogravitation (ZARM) der Universität Bremen

Ab dem 1. März 2016 übernimmt Marc Avila die Leitung des Fachgebiets Strömungsmechanik im Fachbereich Produktionstechnik – Maschinenbau und Verfahrenstechnik – der Universität Bremen. Er tritt damit die Nachfolge von Hans Rath an, der das Amt 31 Jahre lang innehatte und 2012 unerwartet verstarb. Verbunden mit der Übernahme der Professur für Strömungsmechanik wird ihm auch die Institutsleitung des ZARM übertragen. Damit löst er Claus Lämmerzahl ab, der in der Zwischenzeit als Geschäftsführender Direktor des ZARM eingesetzt war.

Marc Avila stammt aus dem kleinen Dorf La Selva del Camp in der Nähe von Barcelona, Spanien, und ist im November mit seiner Familie nach Bremen gezogen. Im Anschluss an die Elternzeit wird der 34-jährige seine neue Leitungsaufgabe am ZARM wahrnehmen und zählt damit zu den jüngsten Institutsleitern der Universität Bremen. „Es ist für mich eine Ehre, die Leitung des ZARM zu übernehmen, das international ein hohes Ansehen genießt. Die interdisziplinäre Arbeitskultur des ZARM zusammen mit der Vielfalt der Forschung und der entspannten Atmosphäre im Fachbereich Produktionstechnik waren für mich sehr wichtig. Die Dynamik von Strömungen spielt eine entscheidende Rolle in verschiedensten Schwerpunktthemen der Universität Bremen, nicht nur in der Raumfahrt- und Werkstofftechnik, sondern beispielsweise auch in ozeanischen Prozessen. Deswegen freue ich mich auf fachübergreifende Kooperationen innerhalb der Universität“ erklärt Avila, der zuvor Professor für Simulation in der Nano- und Mikrofluidmechanik am Lehrstuhl für Strömungsmechanik der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg war.

Werdegang

Marc Avila studierte Mathematik an der „Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona“ und an der „University of Glasgow“. Am Institut für Angewandte Physik der „Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya“ in Barcelona promovierte er von 2005 bis 2008. In dieser Zeit entschied er sich für eine internationale wissenschaftliche Laufbahn und verbrachte die Hälfte seiner Promotionszeit an der „Arizona State University“, wo er als Gastwissenschaftler forschte. Es folgte ein Aufenthalt als Postdoktorand am Max Planck Institut für Dynamik und Selbstorganisation in Göttingen, bevor er 2011 den Ruf der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg erhielt.

Generational Shift at ZARM

Marc Avila is the new director of the Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM) of the University of Bremen

As of 1^st of March 2016, Marc Avila holds the Chair in Fluid Mechanics at the Faculty of Production Engineering – Mechanical Engineering & Process Engineering – of the University of Bremen. He succeeds Hans Rath who had held the Chair for 31 years and died unexpectedly in 2012. By taking over the professorship for fluid mechanics he is also appointed head of the ZARM, a position previously filled by Claus Lämmerzahl who had acted as Executive Director for the last three years.

Marc Avila comes from the small village La Selva del Camp (south of Barcelona) in Spain. Together with his family he moved to Bremen in November last year. Following his parental leave the 34-year-old will become one of the youngest directors of a scientific institute at the University of Bremen. “It is an honor for me to become head of the ZARM, a distinguished research institute of international renown. The interdisciplinary structure of the ZARM, along with the broad range of research areas and the relaxed atmosphere in the Faculty of Production Engineering, were decisive factors for me. The dynamics of fluid flows plays a key role not only in space technology but also in other core research areas at the University of Bremen such as material sciences and oceanic processes. I am therefore looking forward to new opportunities for cooperation” says Avila who previously worked as professor for Simulation of Nano and Microflows at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics of the “Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg”.

Career

Marc Avila studied Mathematics at the “Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona” and the University of Glasgow. From 2005 to 2008 he worked on his PhD at the Institute for Applied Physics of the “Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya” in Barcelona. Back then he decided on an international scientific career and spent half of his PhD as a research scholar at the Arizona State University. Subsequently, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen before he joined the Engineering Faculty of the “Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg” as professor in 2011.
