The ZARM centrifuge allows an economic evaluation of alternative designs, environmental tests for aircraft and spacecraft equipment, investigation of complex problem areas, and validation of numerical methods with instrumented physical models.

Though the centrifuge is unique in its intended research applications, recent worldwide interest in centrifuge modelling has concentrated mainly on geotechnical applications. The ZARM centrifuge facility has a much broader application area. The new centrifuge will address research needs in physical modelling across the full range of engineering applications that will depend on the ingenuity of its users and the design of the experimental set-ups.
