Material Science Laboratory

The ZARM Materials Laboratory is shown below in Figure 1 was completed on 13.9.16 which marked the complete installation of the glove box. The laboratory includes a fume hood, glove box, and capsule experiment that can be used in the drop tower or in terrestrial conditions.

Self-Propagating High-Temperature Combustion Synthesis (SHS) Capsule

Below is a photograph of the ZARM Self-Propagating High-Temperature Combustion Synthesis (SHS) Capsule. The capsule has two shelves for two independent experiments during a drop or catapult. The capsule is equipped with high and low speed cameras for each reaction chamber shelf as well as other reaction measuring and monitoring devices. Ronald Power Supplies (RPS) were designed and constructed exclusively for use to provide constant power to the reaction chamber. The RPS’s ensure the precise control of power to start each reaction with a high repeatability tolerance.

This capsule has been modified to accommodate other projects, such as the production of nanofluid and nanomaterials in low gravity.
