Workshop on Scientific Mission Monitoring and Data Analysis

Diese Pressemitteilung ist nur in englischer Sprache verfügbar.

Since several years, the ZARM institute is involved in science space missions as a specialist for mission design and subsystem analysis. In this scope, a very interesting field of technology are Drag-Free spacecraft. The development over the last years has revealed a raising interest for appropriate modelling and simulations of such systems. In the framework of our current work about satellite dynamics modelling, in-orbit calibration and data processing, the ZARM will organize a workshop from 21st to 23rd of May 2008 on the topic "Techniques for Scientific Mission Monitoring and Data Analysis". The science-driven satellites such as LISA/LPF, Gaia, STEP, MICROSCOPE, etc. share common criteria for the successful accomplishment of their mission objectives.

  1. They are a new generation of satellites in the scientific and technical sense because of the expected improvement of measurement accuracy by several orders of magnitude.
  2. The dynamics of the satellite are very closely linked to the scientific measurement instruments, and
  3. the processing of the measurements will often need extensive iterations during and after the mission.

One of the leading challenges posed by these missions is to make sure that the measurements and their processing are not affected by errors that are hard to detect, yet may disturb or even falsify the final result. Different approaches have been conceived to tackle this problem. All of them involve aspects of Modelling, In-Orbit Calibration and Data Processing.

The organisers of this workshop want to bring together researchers from different projects and diverse subfields of engineering, physics and astrophysics working on sophisticated past and/or future science missions. The primary goal is to share knowledge between different missions and fields of science in order to allow the identification of similarities and the transfer of ideas, approaches, methodologies and techniques between the various fields. The focus will be more on the methodology and the techniques applied for scientific quality monitoring and data processing rather than on the scientific result of a mission.
